They are fairly easy to maintain and breed in a captive setting and get along relatively well with other ducks. But since they are very small ducks (some weigh just about 15 ounce) care should be taken to make sure that they do not bullied. They prefer natural cover for nesting but can do otherwise. They can breed in their first year. Clutches consist of 6 to 8 eggs and are incubated for about 24 days. The ducklings are easy to raise and are tame.
